Wine: 2008 Manu Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Wine Year: 2008
Wine Label: Manu
Wine Style: Sauvignon Blanc
Wine Region: Marlborough, NZ

I picked up a bottle of the Manu Sauvignon Blanc a few weekends ago from a local wine shop called Vintage Berkeley  - it was new and had descriptor “serviced chilled and have with Oysters”. My wife asked I pick up a decent bottle of white to compliment the meal we were having that night (Halibut) and this sounded like it could fit the part. Both of us LOVED this wine, which I picked up for $14 (I see it listed on Snooth for as low as $9.95). I picked up another bottle of white for approximately the same price that day and looking back, I wish I had purchased two of the Manu. This wine is refreshing, bright and zesty with an herbaceous, fruit forward appeal. It was great with dinner, and even with the Pineapple sorbet desert which we enjoyed following our meal.  The Manu brand was founded by New Zealand winemaker Steve Bird with help from “purveyor” David Duckhorn. “Manu” is the Maori (indigenous people of New Zealand) word for both Bird and Kite. This wine is an exemplary wine which does demonstrate the greatness of what New Zealand’s Marlborough region has to offer and which was a pleasant compliment to an early spring weekend evening.

Album: The Nest And The Skull

ultre-album-image.jpg
Artist: Ultre
Music Year: 2009
Music Label: Audiobulb Records
Music Style: Electronic
Music Region: United Kingdom

Ultre is a UK based artist of Irish decent, who makes great electronic music which is sourced from analog sounds and then combined to “compose” the tracks which are found on this album. Crafted from guitar, piano, electronics and homemade beats, Ultre’s second album is an elegant, bold & extravagant example of modern composition. There is an absence of Digital Signal Processing & effects within the music which provides an incredibly organic appeal. As with the Manu Sauvignon Blanc, this song (and the entire Ultre album)” is a refreshing, bright and zesty foray into modern production. I discovered Ultre about 3 months ago and have been listening to this album non-stop since that time. I have been waiting to find the perfect wine to match with this album, and when I had the Manu SB I knew I had found my match.

This album and this wine are a perfect way to welcome the warmer weather into the San Francisco Bay Area or anywhere else for that matter.

Chilean Charm

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

For this week’s Wine and Music pairing, I have included two Chilean products that go fantastically together and truly demonstrate the potency of regional pairing. Chile is also the home of Aurelio Montes, owner of Vina Montes  who plays monastic chants to his wines, and who commissioned the recently published Heriot Watt study  which proves that music can enhance the taste of wine.

root 1Root 1 is made from ungrafted rootstocks that date back to the earliest days of Chilean grape cultivation (approximately 500 years). Jose Antonio Escobar is a classically trained guitar player and performer from Chile who has been won more then 15 of the world’s guitar playing competitions. As with this great and inviting Chilean wine, Escobar’s album titled Guitar Music of Chile is an authentic and momorable representation of what the region has to offer.

Music Style: Classical Guitar
Music Region: Santiago, Chile
Music Year: 2008
Music Label: Naxos
Music Link: Jose Antonio Escobar
Music Description: José Antonio Escobar is a fabulous guitarist who was born in Santiago Chile, and graduated with the highest honors from University of Chile. He has toured numerous cities throughout Europe, North, Central and South America, as well as the Asia/Pacific region, Middle East and North Africa. Check him out on YouTube- his poise, and control of the guitar is rather amazing stuff.

The track included with this pairing is called “Euclidica” and is based on the national dance of Chile called the Cueca.

Wine Style: Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile
Wine Year: 2006

Wine Description:  This is a delicious red wine with delicate notes of mocha and chocolate. Root: 1 is known for its elegant, lush, ripe fruit flavors and its original Chilean rootstocks. Felipe Tosso is the driving force behind the winery’s excellence and, similar to Jose Antonio Escobar, graduated from the University of Chile. Tosso then moved on to Concha y Toro  where he quickly rose to be the chief winemaker before heading off to start his own brand.

Rustic and Rewarding

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

For this week’s Wine and Music pairing, we have a Michigan based 5 piece band called Frontier Ruckus  and a 2005 Petit Sirah from California based Ursa Vineyards  .

The wine and the music both have a rustic and laid back feel which is very rewarding when the two are enjoyed together. Special thanks to the band’s label Quite Scientific  for letting us post this track 5 weeks before release date. I can only assume from the statement below that folks at Ursa Vineyards would also approve of this pairing.

Wine Region: California - Paso Robles / Sierra Foothills / Central Coast
Wine Year: 2005
Wine Label: Ursa Vineyards

Wine Link:Ursa Vineyards Petit Sirah

Wine Description: This 2005 Vineyard Blend is a mixture of the Ursa Vineyard’s 2005 roster of Petite Sirahs. It includes 33% of their Central Coast, 33% of their Sierra Foothills, and 33% of their Paso Robles. 425 cases of the Vineyard Blend were produced. It is a fruity and dark wine with a deep texture but it is not overwhelming or abrasive.  It really opens up in the glass and lingers on the palate.

Ursa Vineyards is a collaborative effort between a husband and a wife team who both used to work for David Bruce. All of the fruit is fermented in small fermenters and worked by hand. The handmade approach which this band and this winery take in creating their products offers a very credible and “vintage” experience which is especially present when pairing the two. The barn included on the website for Ursa Vineyards looks like just the sort of place you would find the band Frontier Ruckus performing their songs.

Music Style:  Folk: Americana
Music Region: Orion Town, Michigan
Music Year: 2008
Music Label:  Quite Scientific
Music Link:  Frontier Ruckus

Music Description:

Frontier Ruckus, as their name alludes, is as honest and down-home Americana as you can get (banjos/story telling) yet maintains a strong sense innovation and modern appeal (one of the more interesting and dynamic websites I have seen in a while). In the same way which the wine is a blend of local regional grapes, so too is this band which includes artists from a few different Michigan regions.

The band’s first album, titled The Orion Songbook (Orion Town is a made up place), is full of mystical lyrics and story telling extravagance. This album is a lyrical roller coaster taking the listener on a wild ride of words and phraseology that can truly be appreciated when you view the entire hand-written “scroll”  of lyrics on their website.

The track included with this post is called “Dark Autumn Hour” and is a perfect track for sunset in October with a glass of this Petit Sirah from Ursa Vineyards.  For added context, check out the band performing this song live.

A Picturesque Pairing

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

Thus far in my Wine and Music pairings (which started in May), I have not included any “classical” music and have focused mostly on summery and zesty tunes that fit nicely with the recent warmer months and with less heavy wines.  As we have now entered the cooler climate and the changing of the seasons, nothing seems more fitting then a purple colored, full bodied red wine and some contemporary piano compositions.

In this case, the artist refers to his material as “Post-Classical” and it’s a blend of classical and electronic.  The album included in this pairing is 24 Postcards in Full Colour from producer/artist/composer Max Richter. An interesting note about this album is that as part of the project, each track has been paired with its own image (there are 24 tracks, 24 postcards images included with the album).

This album is a great match for a Petite Sirah, which packs a more intense punch than a regular syrah. Petite Sirah is said to be better when paired with full flavored foods such as roast beef, or with mature cheeses. In comparison, this album is full of embellishing 2-3 minute compositions which are precise yet powerful, and are chock full of mature emotional flavor. This album is a pleasant and complimentary match for the dark yet inviting essence of this wine.

Wine Region:  California: Santa Cruz Mountains
Wine Year: 2004
Wine Label: Sones Cellars

Wine Description: This approachable Petite Sirah begins with aromas of cherries and cedar which are followed by flavors of dark berries, oak, and black pepper. This wine has a firm yet subtle texture and a good mouth feel.  There were a total of 145 cases produced. Sones Cellars is a small family winery located in Santa Cruz, California. Their flagship wines are Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Michael and Lois Sones met in the mid-1980s while working at sea on a cruise ship.

I also mentioned this wine briefly in my previous post as a good pairing with southern rock outfit Delta Spirit. As much as I enjoyed tasting this wine with a rock band, I find that the more compositional aspect of Max Richter really pulls the emotion and the substance out of the wine and leaves room for opening up of flavors.

Max Richter

Max Richter

Music Style:  Classical: Composition
Music Region: London, UK
Music Year: 2008
Music Label:  Fat Cat
Music Link:  http://www.maxrichter.com

Music Description:  German Born, now living in London, Max Richter studied Piano at University of Edinburgh and is said to be heavily influenced by Philip Glass. Richter’s first project was called Piano Circus and was an ensemble of six pianists that has performed all over the world. Max Richter has recently produced albums for folk legend Vashti Bunyan, and for the Scottish rock quartet The Twilight Sad – also on the Fat Cat label. Max has also performed and written with electronic luminaries such as Future Sound of London and Roni Size.

The name of this track is “H in New England” and it includes gently cascading and fluxing trails of piano. It is both complex and simple and includes a series of emotionally gripping crescendos. It reminds me a lot of the changing of the seasons (and the leaves in New England) that starts later in September.

Pairing Wine and Music – Share in the Fun

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

“If you’re feeling what I’m feeling come on, all you soul searching people come on.”
- Delta Spirit

In an effort to share in the fun of Wine and Music pairing, I would like to open this week’s pairing to suggestions from others.

The album title “Ode to Sunshine” and artwork for this band are clearly a great fit for the Wine sect. To add a little incentive, the first 2 people to respond with their own pairing ideas will receive a complimentary copy of the debut album from Delta Spirit album.

As a pairing reference, I was in Santa Cruz this weekend and picked up a few local treats - I enjoyed the Delta Spirit album with both a 2004 Sones Petite Syrah and a 2004 Nuamann Estate Merlot. Both were purchased at Santa Cruz local wine guru Vinocruz.

The song included with this post is titled “Trachcan” and it’s the band’s debut single. The guy with the glass of wine in the album artwork is Dr. Thomas Payne, who is the uncle of Delta Spirit lead singer Kelly Winrich.

Delta Spirit’s debut album was released this week on 38 year old Massachusetts based label Rounder Records. Rounder’s most recent success was the duet “Raising Sand” by Allison Krauss and Robert Plant which has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has gone on to receive numerous awards and nominations.

Esoteric Electronic

posted by Adam in Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

This week’s Wine and Music Pairing includes a 2006 Pinot Noir from Kent Rasmussen’s Esoterica label and a track called ‘Vine to Vine’ from Matthew Dear’s most recent full length album titled “Asa Breed“. It’s a rather enticing match which exemplifies the concept of pairing “dark and mysterious” music with red wine.

“The synergism of nature and technology - the old and the new - makes for a very centered and peaceful life.”

The above quote is from wine maker Kent Rasmussen, but it could very well have been from musician and producer Matthew Dear. In the same fashion which Kent has created a lifestyle and product which cull from new and historical methods of wine making, Matthew Dear crafts amazing and globally recognized music which blends live instrumentation (old) and modern sampling techniques (new) to form a unique and highly enjoyable result.

The Esoterica label according to the Kent Rasmussen website, is a “weird and wonderful” brand. The Ghostly International label, of which Matthew Dear was the first artist to be released, is also of this mind set.  Both the wine and the music label are known for bringing a consistent flow of top quality and innovative products to the market. Kent Rasmussen Winery has released a number of impressive wines, but prides itself most on its flagship Pinot Noir. Ghostly has also released a number of quality artists but maintains an immense pride, and has had a series of global success with its flagship artist Matthew Dear.  Kent Rasmussen has released wine on both his Kent Rasmussen label and its sister label Ramsey Wines (named after Kent’s wife Celia), and Matthew Dear has released music on both the Ghostly label and its sister brand Spectral.

Kent Rasmussen is known both for his wine making and his willingness (in 1979) to plant and harvest grapes in a region not yet established or trusted. Similarly, Matthew Dear was willing to blend the electronic genre with songwriting at an early time in music history when the electronic genre was not as favorable. In releasing products under different names and in different styles, both Kent and Matthew have stayed relevant and have carved out niches for themselves which allow for innovation and an established consistency of excellence.

Kent Rasmussen

Wine Description: - The website for Kent Rasmussen Winery says “if I could tell you only one thing about us, it would be this: we make ‘Purely Poetic’ Pinot Noir“. Many historians in Northern California will claim that Kent is a not only a great wine maker, but a visionary based on his willingness and success in farming a region once considered too harsh for quality Pinot Noir. Carneros, CA is now considered one of the best growing regions in the world for this grape. Kent and his wife Celia Ramsey operate the winery with the help of their two sons. Ken originally caught the wine bug while living in Germany during his college years.

The grapes in this wine were grown on the Rasmussen Napa estate as well in Mendocino’s Potter Valley.  This wine is rich and complex, but smooth and soothing. Flavors of ripe berry -especially cherry are complimented by a nice toasted oak. I enjoyed the feel and texture of this wine in my mouth especially when enjoyed with music. It’s a fine example of Pinot Noir and well worth the $20 dollar price tag.

Matthew Dear

Asa Breed Black Edition

Music Description:  Texas born, Detroit based Matthew Dear has been releasing albums since the early 90’s and has won international praise for his work. The son of a folk singer, Mathew Dear also records under the successful techno moniker Audion.

Matthew Dear records for the prestigious Ghostly International label and its sister label Spectral Sounds (as Audion) and makes genre bending blends of pop hooks and electronic rhythms which he combines with sensible lyrics and layered vocals. No matter what moniker or genre, Matthew Dear always provides a unique musical experience with a spectacular fusion of live and electronic instruments. Unlike most electronic music, lyrics and story telling are a staple of Matthew’s sound and have helped achieve a high level of pop sensibility – one which is evident in the success of his most recent album. Be sure to keep an eye out for the deluxe packaging of the “Asa Breed Black Edition” (including remixes by Hot Chip and Fourtet as well as other bonus material).

The song itself was written about Mathew Dear’s great grand father who was killed by Texas rangers in the 1920’s.  I must point out that this track is VERY unconventional for Matthew Dear in the sense that is has a country tinge and he is a known electronic/techno superstar, however I find it blends fantastically with the wine as do most tracks on the “Asa Breed” album and of course the track name “Vine to Vine” is appropriate for a pairing of this nature.

Check out videos from Mathew Dear by visiting his website or more of  his music selections at his Myspace page.

Bohemian Highway Blues

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

Uncork, unwind and let the journey begin” - Bohemian Highway Winery

The first time I purchased Bohemian Highway Chardonnay was just after a long windy drive down the actual “Bohemian Highway” while en route to Cazadero, CA. After such a memorable and scenic route, I immediately noticed the artwork and label name on the wine bottle during a stop at a local wine retailer called Sophie’s Cellars. I especially liked the price point ($8.99 though I’ve now seen it as low as $5.99) and decided to give a few bottles a try.

Prior to moving to California, I worked as a music supervisor for independent films in New York. The most recent film I worked on was titled Shooting Livien and featured Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Jason Behr (Roswell), and Sarah Wynter (24). My favorite part of the process of pairing music and film was “scoring” a scene - choosing the right lyrics, tempo and mood for a particular moment in a film’s plot – a moment where the song playing in the background can tell as good and as important a part of the story as the images themselves. A musical score in this capacity acts as an “enhancement” of the movie experience. Music adds color and context, and pulls the story together in a very poignant and special way. When the pairing is done well, magic happens.

As per recent studies published on wine, music has been proven to similarly enhance the experience of wine. I generally find the “mood” of the track is easier to pair than the lyrics. After discovering that Vetiver’s music and this chardonnay are a great match from a mood perspective, I was excited to find that the song “Blue Driver” lyrically exemplifies the concept of a nice relaxing drive on the “Bohemian” highway.

Foot upon on the throttle, watching the old slow road, looking out the rear view mirror, for the highway patrol“- “Blue Driversong lyric

The track is a bluesy fun filled tune with acoustic guitars and a relaxed tempo. As much as this song compliments the taste of the chardonnay itself, the addition of lyrics about highway driving in tandem with the imagery of the label is a nice coupling that adds to the experience and in my book makes for an unforgettable Wine and Music pairing.

Enjoy!

Wine Description: This lightly-oaked Chardonnay is marketed as the “embodiment of the casual, free-flowing spirit you’ll find along the way when driving the Bohemian Highway“. The wine is great for summer and is clean and crisp and full of fresh apple and pear flavors. I have shared a few bottles with a salmon dinner and some friends, and on another occasion with a picnic lunch hike and it was perfectly suited for either occasion. I was not as impressed with the merlot from Bohemian Highway, so would steer interested parties toward their Chardonnay.

Music Year: 2008 (May)
Music Style: Folk
Music Region: San Francisco, CA
Music Label: Gnomonsong

Music Description: Vetiver is guitarist and songwriter Andy Cabic and a host of his instrumentally savvy friends and touring buddies. Vetiver’s most recent album “Thing of the Past” is comprised entirely of cover versions of some of the band’s influences and favorite songs.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Vetiver perform live on a number of occasions and they are always a treat. They have been releasing albums since 2005, which is the year of the Bohemian Chardonnay included in this pairing. As the band is from San Francisco, comparisons to The Grateful Dead and other psychedelic folk/Americana bands are often used. I do agree with these comparisons, but find that Vetiver has its own unique and desirable angle - one that is especially evident in songs such as the one posted here.

In line with the relaxing, uncorked layed back mentality of the Bohemian Highway, it’s worth noting that - “Blue Driver” was originally written and performed by Michael Hurley, a folk legend from the late 70’s who has recorded records in many different parts of the country, including California. Although Hurley has never gained a large audience, critics, musicians, and loyal followers have all sung his praises. Hurley’s music is a known influence for popular acts including Lucinda Williams, Smog, Yo La Tengo, and Cat Power. Hurley sings with Vetiver during the chorus of the song included with this post, and is the voice of the police man at the very end of the track. Fun stuff – check out Michael Hurley singing his own version of the track here.

Complimentary Cool

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

For this week’s Wine and Music post, we continue to explore the pairing potential of Willamette Valley, Oregon with a 2006 Pinot Noir accompanied by a silky smooth folk re-issue from early 70’s groove wizard Rodriguez.

Cool (adjective) - moderately cold; neither warm nor cold

Willamette Valley is known for its cool climate and has been acknowledged as one of the best regions for Pinot Noir. The founders of Benton-Lane moved to Oregon from California in order to set up their shop in the best growing climate for this type of wine.

Cool (adjective) - characterized by great facility; highly skilled or clever

Rodriguez’s lyrics and style epitomize the “cool” so frequently associated with the early 70’s and though admittedly the 2006 Pinot and this music have over 30 years between them, and pairing “cool” is as cliché an approach as it gets, I find these two cool products are complimentary to one another and that they are an undeniable match.

Wine: Benton Lane Pinot Noir 2006

Wine Region: Willamette Valley, Oregon
Wine Label: Benton-Lane
Wine Year: 2006
Wine Type: Red: Pinot Noir
Wine Link: http://www.snooth.com/wine/benton-lane-pinot-noir-2006/

Wine Description: Benton-Lane Winery is a family owned estate which operates on the grounds of an old sheep ranch called Sunnymount. Their first vintage was in 1992 and they have since gone on to win two Top Wines in the World. Benton-Lane’s environmentally conscious vineyard practices have earned them certification under the internationally sanctioned L.I.V.E (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) program, and regionally sanctioned Salmon Safe program. Benton-Lane was founded to release great Oregon Pinot Noir and they have certainly accomplished that goal.

This wine has a great spicy yet smooth character and a balanced black cherry and plum flavor. I found it to be extremely pleasant and will definitely be picking up some more. According to the company website, “This deep ruby colored pinot noir has impressive and varietal aromas of cherries, red plums, hibiscus and wild mushrooms.” I’ll admit I wasn’t aware of the mushrooms until reading about it after the tasting, but I did notice something else in the mix which offered a unique earthy feel.

Music: Rodriguez

Music Label: Light In The Attic
Music Year: August 2008 / Original Release - March 1970
Music Type: Folk : Psychedelic/Rock
Music Link: http://www.lightintheattic.net

rodriguez-album-cover.jpg

Music Description: The Rodriguez “Cold Fact” album is being re-released in mid August by uber-hip Seattle label, Light in the Attic. Rodriguez - born Sixto Rodriguez - but who referred to himself as Jesus Rodriguez, is an early 70’s psychedelic folk musician who had a decent amount of success in South Africa and Australia, but has been a relative unknown in the US and Europe. Originally from Detroit, Michigan- Rodriguez’s albums are full of a unique flavor, and have been described as “outspoken lyrics, unforgettable tunes and a trippy vibe.” For lack of better ways to put it, Rodriguez aged incredibly well over time.

Rumors of Rodriguez death in the late 70’s sent the musician into further obscurity where he remained for many years. Only recently has his name starting surfacing again, much as a result of the re-issue of this album.

Light in the Attic has released some great albums recently but this one hits the ball out of the park. Each track is a gem, and is reminiscent of early Simon & Garfunkel or Donovon but with much more of an edge- an edge that sits closer to a Bob Dylan or a Fela Kuti. There is a obvious psychedelic slant to the album, evident from the colorful and catchy hit “Sugarman” as well as other tracks such as “This is Not a Song, Its an Outburst” and “Crucify Your Mind” but his approach does not water down the message or come off too “hippy-dippy” (a term coined comedic great George Carlin).

Including with this post is Rodriguez’s popular hit single “Sugarman“. As far as I know, Snooth is the ONLY place you can download this song until the album comes out on August 19th. Extra Special Thanks to everyone at Light in the Attic for granting permission to share this track in advance of the album release and for bringing this amazing product back into the market.

Oregon Originals

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

For this week’s Wine and Music pairing I have chosen a band and a bottle from Oregon – a 2007 Adelsheim Rose from Willamette and Portland based Blind Pilot.

There is a great review of the wine by Matt Kramer in The Oregonian (June 16th) which has a reference to music and wine.

Matt comments that we can all grow fatigued by complex flavor filled “symphonic” wines but that this Adelsheim Rose can be considered a – “catchy pop tune” which “you’ll be humming along with pleasure and the bottle will suddenly be empty.” I would have to agree with Matt on this and I find that a catchy pop tune from a local band is a great match.

In addition to inducing pleasure and humming, this wine has a friendly and summery mood which won’t be out of place this 4th of July weekend on the picnic table with BBQ and beer.

Blind Pilot were introduced to me last week by a friend and I’ve listened to this album at least 20 times already. It’s a phenomenal pop/folk blend with intelligent lyrics and bountiful instrumentation. The band is touring the west coast this summer (on bicycles!) from Portland, Or all the way to Mexico. Learn more by visiting the band’s website or a check out this recent article in the Oregon Willamette Weekly which talks about the band’s first tour, and the band’s founding.

I am equally excited about this Pinot Noir Rose which I discovered (and finished) last night with my friend Sean. Adelsheim Vineyards, is located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and was founded in 1971. The 2007 Adelsheim Rosé is a clean and crisp wine with present, but light fruit (cherries and strawberries). We only picked up one bottle of the Rose last night (at K&L here in San Francisco), but I will definitely be picking up a few more before the weekend and will certainly be enjoying along with Blind Pilot’s debut album “3 Rounds and a Sound“.

Unoaked Dub

posted by Adam in Snooth, Wine, Guest Bloggers, Music

For today’s Wine and Music pairing I chose a refreshing 2006 California Chardonnay and a flavorful Dub album which was released in 2007. The wine is fermented in 100% stainless steel and therefore has minimal oak influence. Unoaked wine is known to emphasize the natural flavors of the grapes, along with elements of the soil in which they grew.

‘Dub’, an increasingly popular offshoot of Reggae, is achieved by manipulating, remixing and reshaping previously recorded sound bytes. Dub music is known to emphasize the original “riddims” of a reggae track, and to expose the unique and new ideas of the dub producer. In much the same way that Dub producers do, Wine producers must also mix and test the results of their manipulations before releasing their product to the public. Both Dub and Unoaked wine are heavily influenced by their local region.

As the world’s favorite white wine, Chardonnay is widely consumed in the summer time. Reggae music is also widely consumed in the summertime (having originated in Jamaica) and thanks to artists such as Bob Marley, is one of the world’s most popular genres.

In the spirit of all things summery and refreshing, the song included with this post is titled “Sun Shines on You”. The track pairs fantastically with the Balletto 2006 Teresa’s Chardonnay, but will also pair nicely with other whites being enjoyed during the summer months.

Music Description:
Ashtech, who started his music career in Italy at the age of 12, is a solo artist, a musician (in the Italian mainstream pop band Almamegretta) and as a producer whose style combines original dub and urban electronica. Ashtech’s works are uniquely characterized by the flavor of his heavy and dubby bassline. Ashtech’s premier solo album titled “Walking Target”, was released in the summer of 2007 and has been considered a masterpiece of dub by the worldwide music press.

According to Ashtech: “The way I play the bass is very instinctive - many artists ask me how do I get this sound. I always reply that it is the way your fingers touch the instrument, that give the right resonance to the strings.”

Ashtech releases his music on a number of music labels including Interchill Records. Founded in 1995, Interchill got its start in the in Montreal with a focus on ‘organic electronica for expanding minds’. Now, after 13 years in operation, the label has soundly established itself as a key player in the downtempo/electronic scene and is known worldwide for releasing hi-fidelity music that lasts.

Tasting Notes:

The chardonnay grape is very malleable, in that it reflects and takes on the impression of its region and is sensitive to its local soil. Dub is also very malleable in that it reflects and takes on the impression of the original sounds and regional creativity of its producers. As with Reggae, Dub initially came from Jamaica, but has since expanded to have uniquely routed scenes in regions such as London and San Francisco.

As I am not as much a fan of buttery/vanilla as I am of crisp/refreshing, I prefer my chardonnay on the unoaked side. In this pairing, I find that the metallic and crisp, yet bright and flowery sounds of the dub sit nicely with my understanding that this wine was fermented in stainless steel.

This wine and this music compliment one another in many ways - contextually in that they are both seasonal and great during the summer, but also philosophically in that they are hand picked, and produced with extreme personal care.

John Balletto began farming in 1977 at the tender age of 17. Ashtech began music at age 12. John Balletto was a successful grape farmer before releasing his own wine brand. Ashtech was a successful bass player before releasing his own album. Both John Balletto and Ashtech still make a living selling their craft to others (John as a Grape farmer, and Ashtech as a remixer), but focus their truest and most passionate attention on their own work.

Ashtech’s entire album “Walking Through” is a great dub experience. I recommend it in it’s entirely. I find that the track “Sun Shines on You” is an especially good example of the benefits of pairing Dub music and good summer wine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
